Corey Snippets and Clips
Here, you’ll find a collection of Corey’s portfolio of work from The Valley Breeze, Inverse, IGN, Kotaku, Motif, and more.
The Valley Breeze
A free weekly newspaper serving the Blackstone River Valley located in Northern Rhode Island and parts of southern Massachusetts, The Valley Breeze is distributed to more than 1,000 different locations in the area. Corey covers the communities of Woonsocket, North Smithfield, Burrillville, and Blackstone, focusing on everything from human interest stories to political corruption.
Polak realizing a dream with reopening of Roosevelt Park
I noticed online that Blackstone was in the process of refurbishing a decaying public park adjacent to the Blackstone River Bikeway. Come to find out, one local mother who serves on the Board of Selectmen moved mountains to make it ADA accessible.

Lady of the Lake: Courtemanche honored as grand marshal at Wilson Reservoir
A local reservoir with a small but bombastic annual 4th of July celebration named its first grand marshal in 2024: 98-year-old Lucille Courtemance. I hung out with her one afternoon in late June. She told me how she wrote letters to soldiers during WWII.
Egg-cellent: Chicken-keeping grows in North Smithfield post-pandemic
Driving around reporting stories in my hometown, I was shocked to see how many people had signs saying that they had eggs for sale. So I went door to door and talked to people about it.

Oak Hill Cemetery trustee makes only partial payment for tree removal amid disrepair
We had received several complaints about the state of disrepair in a privately owned Woonsocket cemetery. I did some digging and found someone who posted to Reddit saying that the owner had hired them to remove trees—but then stiffed them on the bill.
As a community center, Galileo’s Skatepark is about to shred
One of my earliest ribbon-cutting ceremonies featuring a new business was for a community center / skate park / fitness center hybrid that oozes cool.

Crass culture: Depositions show excessive crude, racist joking in North Smithfield Town Hall
The Breeze obtained depositions related to a high-profile harassment case involving the North Smithfield Town Administrator and his former assistant. In combing through the documents, we discovered that it painted a troubling picture of what culture is like at Town Hall.
Woonsocket’s newest bar Little Lena’s serves cocktails and nostalgia
Channeling my Motif Magazine days spent covering restaurants and bars, I spotlighted a new joint in the heart of Woonsocket.
