The first trailer for Marvel’s gamble Guardians of the Galaxy just premiered on Jimmy Kimmel Live.
Guardians is one of my most anticipated movies of 2014 because it sounds bananas. Also because it stars Chris Pratt. Mostly because it sounds bananas, though.
The trailer is a showcase for the film’s sense of humor more than the standard action spectacle extravaganzas we’re accustomed to from Marvel. In fact, the trailer feels outright bizarre next to Iron Man, Thor, and Captain America. No sweeping romantic score, no hero journey beats, and nary an explosion to be scene. In fact almost as much time is spent on a walkman joke as the action montage.
This. Is. Awesome.
Guardians of the Galaxy is going to be weird and hilarious. Marvel is going out a limb with this one. I can’t wait.
Guardians of the Galaxy is directed by James Gunn. Starring Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, David Bautista, and a lot of others. Opens in theaters August 1, 2014.
